ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

The University of Glasgow has been a home for world-changing research and teaching for more than 560 years.

We are the fourth oldest English-speaking university in the world

ranked in the world’s top 100

a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities

ranked joint 1st in the Russell Group for student satisfaction (NSS 2017)

a founding member of Universitas 21, a network of leading global institutions, and the Guild, a new European research network.

Since 1451, we’ve been tackling the world’s challenges with curiosity, innovation and partnership: nurturing seven Nobel laureates, two prime ministers, and a diverse range of renowned thinkers as they’ve worked to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Among our inspiring people:

James Watt gave power to the industrial revolution

Adam Smith laid the foundations of modern economics

Joseph Lister gave us antiseptic in surgery

Ian Donald showed the world the first ultrasound of a foetus

Edwin Morgan became the first Scottish national poet

Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered radio pulsars.

Today, our global community allows us to pursue the discoveries and connections that can improve our future, while our past achievements inspire our current world changers – Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger are both graduates.

We welcome 26,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 140 countries, offering a modern learning environment across two campuses in a city world renowned for its friendliness and inclusiveness. A third campus in Dumfries is home to our School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
